Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia Hosts Reporting and Benefit Event in New Jersey

On October 20, the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia held its annual Reporting and Benefit Event at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey. The event, which drew a decent number of supporters, highlighted the Archeparchy’s ongoing ministries and pressing challenges while raising over $46,000 to support its mission.

Metropolitan Borys Gudziak delivered a keynote address that outlined the Archeparchy's current initiatives, including the Good Samaritan Pantry. Managed by Sister Teodora Kopyn, OSBM, the pantry assists Ukrainian refugees and individuals struggling with addiction in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood. Metropolitan Borys also spotlighted the Metropolia Humanitarian Aid Fund, a collaboration among all four Ukrainian Catholic bishops in the United States, which has funded 150 humanitarian projects worth over $8 million over the past three years. The Metropolitan emphasized the importance of youth ministry, religious education, and communication, while candidly discussing the challenges faced by the Archeparchy. He appealed for continued support, stating, “I ask you to serve and help, because the whole world is watching us. I ask for your new, fresh, and unyielding support.”

A powerful message was also delivered by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk, who shared insights from her human rights work amid the war in Ukraine. “Putin openly states that there is no Ukrainian nation, no Ukrainian language, no Ukrainian culture,” she said. “In our database of war crimes, more than 80,000 have been documented in just two years. We see how this war reduces people to numbers. But what are we really doing? We are restoring people’s names. Because people are not numbers; every person’s life matters.” Her testimony underscored the importance of resilience and justice, resonating strongly with the audience.

The evening also included the premiere of Standing United, a documentary on the history of Ukrainian Catholic parishes in New Jersey, and the opening of the photo exhibit Faces and Moments: 140 Years of Ukrainian Catholic Pastoral Presence in the US.

Although the event raised over $46,000—short of its $75,000 goal—the donation drive will remain open through Thanksgiving, allowing supporters additional opportunities to contribute. Proceeds will support the Archeparchy's core ministries.

The Archeparchy extended special thanks to New Jersey parishes for preparing raffle baskets, which added to the evening’s sense of fellowship. Attendees were encouraged to continue their support, with the Archeparchy noting that every donation is vital in advancing its mission of service and hope.
