This Lent, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church marks the 80th anniversary of the Lviv Pseudosynod — a gathering in 1946 in Lviv orchestrated by the Soviet regime and held without the participation of any legitimate bishop. Its purpose was to abolish the Union of Brest and eliminate the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
The Archives of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia are central to this effort. They are among the oldest and richest records of Ukrainian presence in the United States, documenting the development of Church life and community for over 100 years. These materials — photos, letters, writings, and publications — are a unique resource for researchers, historians, and anyone interested in the history of the Church and the Ukrainian diaspora. At the same time, the Archives face practical challenges. Multiple relocations, limited resources, and the need for professional expertise mean that the collection is not yet fully organized or accessible. Important work has already begun, but it now needs to be expanded and strengthened.
Join the Lenten Appeal and help us preserve our memory and discover our history. In the 40 days of Lent, we hope to raise $40,000 for this cause.
