Archbishop Borys Gudziak Extends Condolences on the Passing of Prof. Leonid Rudnytzky

Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia has extended his deepest condolences on the passing of Prof. Leonid Rudnytzky, who died on December 8, 2024, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Prof. Rudnytzky was a respected academic and a significant figure in both the Philadelphia and global Ukrainian communities.

On behalf of the clergy, religious, faithful, and the academic community of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Archbishop Borys expressed his solidarity with Prof. Rudnytzky’s family. “I extend my deepest condolences and assure you of our prayerful support during these days of sorrowful farewell.”

Archbishop Borys highlighted the central role that faith and family played in Prof. Rudnytzky’s life. “For the late Academician, as well as for the entire Rudnytzky family, faith in the living God and participation in the life of the Church were the matrix of their existence,” he said.

Archbishop Borys also pointed out Prof. Rudnytzky’s role as an inspiration for younger generations, particularly those displaced by the war in Ukraine. “His life teaches us what it means to be a Christian, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a Ukrainian, and a scholar—how to stand firm in our morals, remain faithful, and be creative and fruitful in our endeavors.”

He expressed gratitude for his interactions with Prof. Rudnytzky: “I thank God for our encounters, for the kind words and noble deeds of the Academician, for moments of shared joy, and for his levity and smile.”
