In October 2024, we marked the 80th anniversary of the Missionary Sisters of the Mother of God.
The Missionary Sisters of Mother of God were founded on the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos in 1944, in Stamford, CT, by Bishops Ambrose Senyshyn and Constantine Bohachevsky. The congregation's main charisms were teaching and spreading knowledge about the Eastern Rite.
The sisters expressed their teaching charism by founding the Mother of God Academy for girls in Stamford, CT, in 1945, Assumption School in Perth Amboy, NJ, in 1963, Infant Jesus Kindergarten in Philadelphia in 1966, and St. Anne's Kindergarten in Stamford in 1972. Over the decades, they taught and educated hundreds of children in these institutions. During the school year, they also catechized in Bristol, PA, Toms River, NJ, Carteret, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA. In the summer, they visited parishes without year-round catechism programs and taught children for 4-5 weeks.
The sisters also creatively fulfilled their mission of spreading awareness of the Eastern Rite. They published The Arch journal, produced records for various church services, printed icons, and developed catechesis books such as Welcome and Our Saints. In the 1950s, they assisted Bishop Ambrose Senyshyn in publishing a bilingual prayer book. Additionally, the nuns hosted women’s retreats at their monastery in Philadelphia. They currently manage the "Treasury of Faith Museum," established in 2005, which is located at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. This museum houses many valuable exhibits illustrating the life of our Church in America.
