The Ukrainian Library in Jenkintown invites the community to a special presentation and book signing of Living Victoriously: The School of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj by Archbishop Borys Gudziak. Published by the Ukrainian Catholic University Press, the book explores the enduring legacy of Patriarch Josyf Slipyj and the spiritual lessons drawn from his life.
The event will be moderated by historian Andriy Zhyvachivsky and will feature a conversation with Archbishop Gudziak, Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and President of the Ukrainian Catholic University.
Living Victoriously is based on Archbishop Gudziak’s speeches delivered in Kyiv and Lviv in June 2017 to mark the 125th anniversary of Patriarch Slipyj’s birth. Titled “Be Yourself” and “Desire the Great!”, these reflections have been expanded and enriched for the publication.
The Philadelphia presentation also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Patriarch’s arrest by Soviet authorities on April 12, 1945—an event that began his 18-year ordeal of imprisonment and exile.
The book includes Archbishop Gudziak’s personal recollections from childhood and youth, his first encounters with the Patriarch, and his impressions from their time together at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Rome. Through these memories, the reader gains a deeper understanding of Patriarch Slipyj’s character and mission, as well as insight into the challenges facing the Church today.
Patriarch Slipyj is portrayed not only as a church leader, scholar, and unbroken prisoner of the Soviet regime, but also as a visionary administrator who—despite adversity—built lasting institutions and inspired generations.
Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.
