On Saturday, June 5, Ukrainian Catholic University held its fourteenth folk ball, “Perelaz,’” in support of talented students and professors. This year the organizers announced that by the end of the event donors had created sixty-seven student scholarships and three for professors.
Traditionally, Most Reverend Borys Gudziak, Metropolitan Archbishop of Philadelphia and President of UCU also took part in the event. This year he greeted the assembled guests via online from Philadelphia.
Addressing friends and donors of UCU, the Metropolitan remarked, “During the pandemic we discovered again how important it is for us to be together. Every time when I think of you, and think of meeting you all soon, I feel good…Today all those young people, whom you have supported with scholarships, are all around the world and they are building our Church.”
He also recalled that it has been two years since he became the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church’s Philadelphia Archeparchy:
“To serve here, the Lord gifted me young people, UCU graduates, those whom you have supported with scholarships, in whom you have believed. They will now build our Church in Philadelphia. Also, today, the young people you supported with scholarships are all over the world: in the USA, Australia, Canada, Europe. Thank you for your generous support of the Ukrainian Catholic University.
About “Perelaz’”
“Perelaz’” is above all a family party in the Ukrainian style, held annually for the past fourteen years at the beginning of June. “Perelaz’” unites donors and friends of UCU as well as entrepreneurs from the Lviv region, different parts of Ukraine, and elsewhere in the world. Together they share ideas, believe in the university’s mission, and financially support talented and low-income students.
This year, 2021, “Perelaz’” is expanding its geographical borders and will take place for the first time in Philadelphia at St. Michael’s Parish in Jenkintown on October 9.
