Honoring 50 Years of “This Land Is Home to Me”: Catholics Discuss the Future of Appalachia

On Saturday, October 25, the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Wheeling-Charleston hosted a dialogue focused on the Appalachian region of the United States.

The event marked the 50th anniversary of This Land Is Home to Me and the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, bringing together Catholic, environmental, and labor leaders from across Appalachia. Approximately 250 bishops, clergy, religious, and lay participants took part in the dialogue on ways to move forward together.

Vicar General of the Archeparchy Mitred Archpriest Peter Waslo represented the Archeparchy, which was invited to participate as two of its Protopresbyterates — North and South Anthracite — are located within the region.

The day featured presentations by local residents who emphasized the importance of both preserving the environment and fostering a sustainable economy that supports the population.

Group discussions centered on themes of labor and land, exploring how the Papal Encyclical Laudato Si’ and the Appalachian Bishops’ pastoral letter This Land Is Home to Me provide guidance in addressing the region’s challenges.
