National Catholic Schools Week at the Assumption Catholic School

From January 25 to 31, National Catholic Schools Week was celebrated across the United States — a special time dedicated to honoring Catholic education, faith, and community. Our Archeparchy is blessed to have three Catholic schools: Saint Nicholas School Minersville, PA,  St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic School in Passaic, NJ, and Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy. This year, we witnessed how National Catholic Schools Week was celebrated at Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy.

At the conclusion of the celebration, Rev. Ivan Turyk, Pastor and Chief Administrator, emphasized that the school community continues to live its mission — to know God, to love God, and to serve God in all that it does. During the Divine Liturgy, students and parents prayed together that the school may always remain a place where faith is lived, truth is taught, and love is practiced. He also noted that the heart of Catholic education is not only academic excellence, but the formation of the whole person — body, soul, and character — helping each child grow in holiness.

School Principal Lissette Shumny shared that Assumption Catholic School is much more than a workplace for her — it is a true calling. She expressed gratitude for the dedication of the teachers, who generously give their time and energy to support the life and mission of the school.

Parents also spoke about why Catholic schooling is so important for their families. They highlighted the strong academic foundation, the values rooted in faith, and the sense of community that shapes their children’s lives. Some parents, who are themselves graduates of the school, shared how it has been a blessing for their families across generations and recalled the lasting impact of traditions such as Ukrainian dancing and the strong family atmosphere they experienced.

We invite you to watch a report on how Assumption Catholic School celebrated National Catholic Schools Week. In the coming years, we look forward to sharing stories and features from our other schools as well — stay tuned!
