Clergy Gather for Conference on Pastoral Responses to Modern Challenges

On November 19, 2024, the clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia gathered at the Presentation of Our Lord Parish in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, for a Clergy Conference. Reverend Allen Hoffa, from the Diocese of Allentown, delivered a compelling presentation addressing the pervasive issue of pornography and its impact on individuals and families.

Fr. Hoffa highlighted pornography as a sin against chastity and a destructive force in modern society, affecting people of all genders, ages, and generations. Drawing on Psalm 51, he emphasized the need for a clean heart and a renewed spirit, echoing King David's plea for forgiveness and a fresh start.

The presentation underscored how pornography distorts interpersonal relationships, fosters unhealthy behaviors, and undermines self-worth, intimacy, and even marital stability. Fr. Hoffa noted its potential role in fueling human trafficking, as the industry exploits vulnerable individuals for profit, causing immense harm.

Throughout his talk, Fr. Hoffa offered a positive, hope-filled approach to addressing the problem within pastoral ministry. He stressed the importance of prevention and education, as well as the power of prayer, confession, and a personal commitment to change. Drawing from his ministry, Integrity Restored, he shared practical resources, including books, manuals, and online materials, to equip priests in supporting those struggling with pornography.

The session was also a call to action, encouraging clergy to collaborate in developing effective pastoral responses. Fr. Hoffa concluded by reminding the attendees of Pope St. John Paul II’s teachings on the dignity of the human person, urging them to uphold these values in their ministry.

The conference provided an opportunity for priests to engage in meaningful dialogue and strengthen their pastoral tools for addressing one of the pressing moral challenges of today’s world.
