Conference on trauma and mental health for the clergy of the Archeparchy

From Tuesday to Thursday, October 22–24, the clergy of the Archeparchy of Philadelphia, led by Metropolitan Borys Gudziak and accompanied by Marta Rubel, the Archeparchy's Social Outreach Director, gathered at the Shady Cove Center in Maryland for a workshop on supporting individuals who have experienced trauma. The conferences were led by Dr. Donna Dobrowolsky and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor Martha Sahyouni from Chicago.

Drawing from their extensive professional experience, both presenters emphasized that the effects of trauma extend beyond emotions and willpower; trauma leaves a physical imprint that must be addressed. Dr. Dobrowolsky explained how trauma and addiction can alter the brain due to its neuroplasticity. However, this same plasticity provides a pathway to recovery. Counselor Sahyouni discussed how trauma narrows a person’s “window of tolerance” for stress, making it challenging to handle even everyday stressors.

The presenters highlighted the importance of spiritual life and community in the healing process for trauma survivors, especially refugees and others experiencing difficult times. Dr. Dobrowolsky stressed the vital role of priests in this journey, as they can celebrate the sacraments, through which God touches and heals individuals.

At the close of the reflection days, the priests had the opportunity to ask practical questions about supporting people seeking guidance in difficult situations. They also had time for private conversations with the presenters. Mitred Archpriest Peter Waslo expressed gratitude to Dr. Dobrowolsky and Counselor Sahyouni for their time and the valuable tools provided to enhance the priests' ministry. Before departing, Metropolitan Borys shared recent updates on the life of the Archeparchy with the clergy.
