On Saturday, December 7, 2024, at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, His Grace Bishop Mykola Bychok, Eparch of the Eparchy of Saints Peter and Paul of Melbourne for Ukrainian Catholics in Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania, was elevated to the dignity of Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church by His Holiness Pope Francis. Metropolitan Borys Gudziak traveled to Rome to take part in this historic moment for our Church.
On December 6, while in Rome, Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, together with Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, Apostolic Administrator of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr in Paris and Bishop-Emeritus of the Eparchy of the Holy Family of London; Bishop Bohdan Dzyurakh, Apostolic Exarch in Germany and Scandinavian countries; and Bishop Mykhailo Bubniy, Exarch of Odesa, paid a visit of gratitude to Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, former Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, who with profound dedication supported Ukraine during his ministry.
On the eve of the feast of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the community of the Pontifical Ukrainian College of St. Josaphat gathered for Great Vespers with Litia.
The service was led by Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, Archbishop of Philadelphia, concelebrating with Fr. Dmytro Shcherbatyi. Joining the seminarians in prayer were invited guests: Bishop Bohdan Dzyurakh, Apostolic Exarch in Germany and Scandinavian countries; Bishop Mykhailo Bubniy, Exarch of Odesa; Fr. Teodosii Hren, Protosyncellus of the Apostolic Exarchate in Italy; and the college’s rectorate, including Fr. Luis Cassian, Rector of the College; Fr. Bernard Pidhirnyi, Vice-Rector; and Fr. Dionisii Zavedyuk, the College’s spiritual director.
The Vespers of this feast highlight the deep faith of St. Nicholas, his virtues, works of mercy, and intercession before God, calling the faithful to emulate the Wonderworker.
