On Monday, May 4, 2026, CNEWA, along with the Knights of Columbus and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, organized the evening event “United in Hope for Ukraine,” during which Metropolitan Borys Gudziak provided an update to those present, both in person and via Zoom, on the devastation caused by the war in Ukraine and the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
Before the formal presentation, the members of CNEWA, the Knights, and the USCCB gathered together for Mass at the Church of Our Savior on Park Avenue and East 38th Street. Bishop Gerald Vincke of the Diocese of Salina, Kansas, and chair of the Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, USCCB, presided over the Eucharistic celebration. Archbishop Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, Monsignor Peter Vaccari, president of CNEWA, and Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, Administrator of Church of Our Savior, were the main concelebrants.
During his homily, Metropolitan Borys highlighted the danger of the prototypical sin—idolatry. “Most evil in the world is, in one form or another, connected with idolatry,” pointed out the Ukrainian Archbishop of Philadelphia. “The gospel leads us to the true God,” added the Metropolitan. “Today, as you gather to reflect upon how to serve, how to be most fruitful in this beautiful mission that you share, as we pray for you, as we pray for all whom you serve, let us put aside all idols […] and open ourselves to the truth, the salvific roadsides of the commandments, which help us love, and allow God to be in us: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,” concluded Archbishop Gudziak.
