On April 26, a conference was held in Paris on the life and ministry of Bishop Volodymyr Malanczuk, who was the first exarch of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr for Ukrainians in France, Switzerland, and the Benelux countries.
The archivist researcher of our Archeparchy, Dr. Maria Ivaniv Lonchyna, participated in this conference. She gave a presentation on the bishop’s participation in the Second Vatican Council. Bishop Volodymyr was one of the most active Ukrainian bishops – he gave a speech before the 2,500 council fathers and made 12 notes on 6 conciliar documents. In her speech, Dr. Ivaniv briefly spoke about the council itself and Bishop Volodymyr’s comments on three documents: On Ecumenism, On the Church, and On the Eastern Catholic Churches. In these notes, he reflected on the reasons that create walls between Churches, the role of the Eastern Catholic Churches in ecumenical dialogue, and the role of the Most Holy Theotokos in the distribution of grace and her title Mediatrix.
This conference was one of the events dedicated to the jubilee year of Bishop Volodymyr in the Paris Eparchy and coincided with the 95th anniversary of his priestly ordination. It started with a Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of St. Volodymyr. After that, Bishop Ihor Rantsya opened the conference and welcomed all participants and speakers. Among the
presenters were Bishop Emeritus Hlib Lonchyna, Fr. Ruslan Pikh, CSsR, Fr. Dr. Athanasius McVay, and Andrian Harandzha, a doctoral student at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
