Lenten Events at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church (Perth Amboy)

During the Lenten season, several spiritual and community events took place in the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Perth Amboy, helping the faithful to more deeply experience this blessed time.

In preparation for the feast of St. Joseph, which will be celebrated on March 19, the women of the parish gathered at the sisters’ convent for prayer and reflection on the life and quiet greatness of St. Joseph. After an introduction by Fr. Ivan Turyk, the participants reflected on Joseph’s faithful trust in God and his role as the guardian of the Holy Family.

The parish teenagers met for a discussion inspired by Psalm 50: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” During the meeting they spoke about the commandments that address human desires and reflected on the relationship between the soul, body, and passions, as well as the role of God’s grace in human life. The gathering also included team games.

The youngest parishioners learned about the Stations of the Cross and the meaning of Christ’s journey to Calvary. At the end of the gathering, the children took part in a creative activity, making sweet lambs from marshmallows and cookies.

The St. Ann Society hosted a successful Jungle Adventure Gift Auction, featuring themed decorations and refreshments. The meal was prepared by the Holy Name Society, with assistance from the parish young adult group.

Students of Assumption Catholic School also participated in a Lenten Lock-In Retreat, which took place at the school. The program included prayer, spiritual reflections with Fr. Ivan, a candlelight procession, vocation discussions with the Sisters, and activities that strengthened both faith and friendship during Lent.
