On May 16, 2026, a charitable gala evening in support of the Saint Gabriel Institute took place in Washington, D.C., to raise funds for the formation of future Church diplomats and communicators of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
In his remarks, Borys Gudziak emphasized the importance of forming a new generation of people capable of representing both the Church and Ukraine in the modern world. “This is not only a war of weapons. It is a war of words, ideas, history, and ideology. And it will end when peace and justice come, when the right ideas are in people’s minds and the right values are in their hearts.”
The Metropolitan also presented the Saint Gabriel Institute program, which combines academic study, spiritual formation, and practical training in Church communications and cultural diplomacy. The first phase of the program is conducted online and includes lectures, readings, and essay writing, while the second consists of a five-month formation program in Washington, where participants live in community, pray together, study at The Catholic University of America and Georgetown University, and engage with diplomatic, academic, and public institutions.
“I am very proud of these 12 people because they truly became one community. They came together. They created a community,” Metropolitan Borys said, speaking about the current fellows of the program.
Only three days after arriving in the United States, the newly appointed Apostolic Nuncio, Gabriele Giordano Caccia, attended his first gala evening in Washington. “My name is also Gabriel, just like this Institute. The role of Gabriel is to bring news and carry a message. I am happy to see the energy with which the Institute is growing and the mission it carries,” the Archbishop said.
The event brought together program fellows, representatives of the Ukrainian community, clergy, diplomats, and other distinguished guests. Among those in attendance were Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States; Denys Senik, Deputy Chief of Mission of Ukraine to the United States; and Bishop Bryan Bayda of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada.
The Saint Gabriel Institute operates at St. Josaphat Seminary, where fellows reside and study during the program. The initiative seeks to form a new generation of Church communicators, diplomats, and leaders for service to the Church and Ukraine in the fields of international relations, media, and public communication.
