Sixth Anniversary of the Passing of Metropolitan Stephen Sulyk

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the passing of Metropolitan-Archbishop Stephen Sulyk (1924–2020), who led the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia from 1981 to 2000. His life journey — from his native Lemkivshchyna, through the trials of war and emigration, to his ministry in the diaspora — became a path of deep faith, perseverance, and trust in God’s providence. In challenging times for the Church, he remained faithful to his mission, nurturing the spiritual life of the community, supporting the clergy, and fostering vocations — often quietly and without drawing attention, yet with profound inner strength.

Reflecting on his life, Metropolitan Borys Gudziak spoke of his deep spiritual maturity and inner peace: “He was not afraid of death, but awaited God’s will with trust.” In these words, we see the essence of his life — a faith that grows in silence, becomes strength in times of trial, and leads to peace in the face of eternity.

Today, clergy and faithful remember Metropolitan Stephen with gratitude and offer prayers for the repose of his soul. We invite you to watch a reflection by Archpriest Dan Troyan, the first priest ordained by Metropolitan Sulyk for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia during his time of service in 1982.
