Ukrainian Catholic Leaders to Visit Washington, D.C., Amidst Ongoing War

Join us on Sunday, March 3 at 10:30 AM as His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk celebrates the Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, D.C. The Archbishop of Washington, Cardinal Wilton Gregory, alongside the head of the US Catholic Conference of Bishops Archbishop Timothy Broglio and Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, will concelebrate.

Throughout their stay, His Beatitude and the members of the Permanent Synod will hold meetings with government officials to address pressing issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and the imperative need to safeguard religious freedom amidst persecution of Christians in territories occupied by Russian forces.

Additionally, the bishops will travel to Philadelphia to participate in the ordination mass of three auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. His Beatitude Sviatoslav will also lead a solemn Prayer for Peace in Ukraine at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Their journey will culminate in New York City, where they will join the Ukrainian community in prayer at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church and will attend the Aid to the Church in Need gratitude mass at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral 

His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk is Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the largest Eastern Catholic Church in communion with the Holy See. A tireless advocate for peace, justice, and religious freedom, he speaks English, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Russian. The Permanent Synod, an advisory body to the Head of the Church, plays a crucial role in guiding the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church's mission.
