Episode 17 — 1633: Metropolitan Petro Mohyla

Petro Mohyla was one of the most influential church leaders in Ukrainian history. Born into a Moldavian princely family, he became Metropolitan of Kyiv in 1633 and led a remarkable revival of Orthodox Church life in Kyiv during the first half of the seventeenth century.

Educated in Western Europe and deeply rooted in the Orthodox tradition, Mohyla brought together theology, scholarship, publishing, architecture, and spiritual renewal. Under his leadership, Kyiv became a major intellectualand theological center for the Orthodox world - from the Middle East to Muscovy.

As Archimandrite of the Kyiv Cave Monastery and later as Metropolitan of Kyiv, Petro Mohyla restored important churches such as Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Church of the Tithes, encouraged theological education, supported printing and publishing, and gathered scholars, theologians, artists, and clergy around a common vision of renewal.

One of his greatest achievements was the founding of the Kyivan Collegium in 1632 through the union of the monastery school and the Kyiv Brotherhood School. This institution later became the famous Kyiv-MohylaAcademy - one of the most important centers of education in Eastern Europe.

Petro Mohyla also authored important theological and liturgical works, including the Orthodox Confession of Faith and the Euchologion, which shaped Orthodox theology and liturgical practice for generations.

Combining the Orthodox spiritual tradition with a broader humanistic vision, Petro Mohyla helped shape Ukrainian church culture and left a lasting influence on the Orthodox world.
